TSUNAMI

Sri Lanka

More than 220,000 people were killed by the Tsunami wave and millions more
have been left homeless. A huge number of the victims are children.

Last year Mission Together, the Church’s main mission support agency for children worldwide, sent £115,316 from England and Wales to help more than 30,000 children in Sri Lanka. This went to 45 children’s projects in 11 dioceses.

This year the focus of Mission Together in our schools is indeed Sri Lanka through the stories of Nadeen and her friends.

On 26th December 2004 the massive Tsunami wave washed
away a lot of this effort and so the work had to start again.

Here are some stories about our work in the affected areas:

Negombo and Maggona

Food for children and babies, clothing and medical care are being distributed in this area by the Salesians of Don Bosco. In Negombo and the surrounding villages emergency accommodation was also made available. In Maggona, Franciscans are providing essential medical care and inoculations for children.

Jaffna

Many people have to live in schools right now. Children are being given some clothes to wear and food to eat. They are also given toys because games help them come to terms with the bad experience more quickly. Some children are happy because they have been able to go back to their own school. The familiarity of schools helps the traumatised children find new stability and hope.

Mission Together in England and Wales Mission

A big “thank you” goes to the children of England & Wales who have contributed to the Mission Together-CAFOD joint Tsunami appeal so generously. So far Catholic Primary schools in England & Wales have sent more than £250,000 to Mission Together. This is your compassionate response to the terrible devastation experienced by other children. Well done!

Mission Together is your missionary work through your generous donations and constant prayer.

We pray:

May the children of Sri Lanka be filled with the light of love, peace and healing.
Amen
